W[rec]ked

I hope this post finds you well, my friends.

It’s been a little over a month and a half since recreational sales went live in Missouri and I feel like it’s a good enough time to give you an update.

I don’t know if you’re aware or if you have been following the news or not, but Missouri’s recreational sales were significantly higher for the opening month than they were for Illinois opening recreational month. That tells me a few different things; First, that the need for marijuana in this country has grown exponentially since the initial few states legalized adult use. Second, Missouri has a heck of a lot of potheads in it! 😂

https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/missouri-marijuana-sales-first-month/63-e97492b3-dba1-473f-905c-777e3e15bbf6

Now, since we’ve gone rec, Ive definitely had my fair share of conversations with some of the medical patients in Missouri.

I know that there are some concerns and I’ve been doing my best to try to reassure medical patients. This is my gentle reminder that we are in the first two months of the recreational industry in Missouri and that things are bound to improve. We all know that change is inevitable and with change comes the ability to find a new normal and adapt. I believe that, as a state, we can take some time to adapt to our new normal. Living through c0v!d, we all know how to embrace life’s challenges, right?

We just have to STOP wanting that instant gratification. 😂👌 (I know, it is a struggle in and of itself) But…to be honest, It is unrealistic for everyone involved. We need patience as patients.

While we’re talking about patience, I’d like to touch on the rockstars who currently work in this wonderful industry. Your Regional/Store Managers, Assistant Managers, Leads, and Bud-tenders; The people who fill your orders, educate you about your choices, and strive for your satisfaction. We are adjusting too, so next time you feel the need to get irritated (because our prices are higher than long established, recreational states and the products we carry aren’t the same as long established recreational states) and feel like you need a target…avoid targeting the people who are doing their level best to help you.

Missouri isn’t there just yet, but give us time and you’ll see things change.

Getting Fresh

Hey everyone, I’m back.

I just wanted to share with you how happy I am with my new home at FRESH KARMA DISPENSARIES. I feel like this is something I could shout to the rooftops, I’ve never felt more like part of a family in a workplace than I do here.

All of my coworkers are genuinely good people, people who care about patients in Missouri and want to make sure they are getting the best experience they can, along side being knowledgeable and understanding.

I guess you could say we’re all lucky, not everyone will have the opportunity to work for this amazing company, or be part of what we are doing for the state. It gives me a lot of joy to be able to bring this kind of experience to patients in Missouri, people who need medicine and want to get the best that they can in order to treat some of the symptoms they experience on a daily basis.

I’m trying not to get choked up while I write this, but I am so blessed to have this opportunity and I am insanely grateful that Fresh Karma chose me to represent their brand. I didn’t realize how important it would be to me to have this kind of support, but I’m so glad that I have it.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’re aware that I have multiple sclerosis. It is an often times debilitating chronic disease that has no known cure. However, I have been able to treat many of my symptoms with medical cannabis and I am so fortunate to have that option.

Some days it doesn’t feel like it’s worth fighting for, or rather, it didn’t feel like it was worth fighting for. But now, now I have so much passion, so much drive and feelings of perseverance, I hope that I can facilitate that for other patients in Missouri.

Over the past months, I’ve been able to talk to patients in Missouri while training at the other Fresh Karma locations. I have heard stories of recovery, stories of pain relief and genuine comfort. I’ve had people tell me that medical cannabis has helped with their anxiety, their PTSD, and various other medical issues. I will strive to provide that experience for everyone I come into contact with, every single day. I want you to know that I’m happy that you chose us and I want you to come back. I want you to feel free to ask questions, about anything. Nothing is silly, no question is stupid. We are here for you, we are able to do a job that we love because of you.

If you’re part of Fresh Karma and you’re reading this, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being good people, thank you for thinking about patients, and thank you for bringing a fresh attitude to Missouri cannabis. Just, thank you. I truly cannot wait to see the great things that we will do, the great things that I will be supported in doing, and growing in general.

If you’re a Missouri patient, our Linwood location is opening November 1 and I sincerely hope you come to visit. I would love to give you the experience you deserve and can’t wait to be your favorite bud tender.

💚, Dani

So far…

Ive spent 6 months working in the local industry. I learned a lot about what kind of culture I wanted to be part of in those 6 months, what kind of goals I wanted to set for myself, and what I really wanted out of this industry.

I like to think of everything as a learning experience, to be honest. I feel as though one cannot truly know what they want until they can tick off certain things that they don’t want.

I want an environment that encourages growth, takes responsibility and treats their employees like people versus a body or a cog in a machine. That experience was not something I learned by working in this industry, but in another. However, the mentality stays the same for me.

I crave a place to call home, one where I am heard and appreciated not only for my knowledge, but my compassion and empathy. An environment that challenges me to be better than I was yesterday and encourages me to be true to myself in the process.

I’m convinced that place exists and I will not give up until I find it.

The why’s and how’s

Well hello, happy to see ya here!

I’ve been meaning to elaborate on my adoration for cannabis, so this blog will be a bit of a highlight sesh’ of the why’s and how’s.

— forgive my random meandering thoughts below—

Follow me…

It all really collided when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2014. Granted, prior to that I did recreationally use cannabis. However, after getting my diagnosis I was compelled to explore just HOW beneficial cannabis could be.

Fast Forward to 2018: I’d spent 4 years post-diagnosis doing solo research regarding cannabis and auto immune diseases (like MS). So many things surprised me as well as gave me hope for treating my symptoms. The reality of “no cure” for my condition was daunting at first, but I’ve been at peace with it for a few years now.

My favorite quote “I’ll live right through it!” — and if you know me, you’ve probably heard it a few times already. Not sorry. That’s basically my whole philosophy in life now, because I can’t change what has happened to me, but I can move forward with the knowledge needed (and expanding said knowledge) to make life better.

That wasn’t enough though. You see, I’m a helper/healer at heart. I want everyone to be happy and as healthy as possible. Though it isn’t always successful, I will never stop trying to help people live symptom free from their illnesses.

Knowledge Upload Incoming!

My bonus dad was an integral part in my pursuit of a career in cannabis, though he likely won’t take credit. Regardless, he (and my mom) have pushed me to learn and grow in my knowledge of cannabis, which I took to like a fish to water. It has become a passion as well as a future I can see myself never tiring of. Huge props to Missouri for allowing medicinal cannabis to take root, even if it has been slow going (thanks COVID). That step more than solidified my purpose to me, and I refuse to look back.

Now, pops (bonus dad) and I attended the Cannabis Industry Showcase in the Historic West Bottoms of KC — Blog: Cannabis Industry Showcase — where we discovered Trichome Institute (who happened to be teaching a course on Interpening) Blog: Interpener Course — I didn’t think I could get THAT pumped up about cannabis, but I was wrong. That course amplified my eagerness tenfold and gave me the boost I needed to dig deeper into cannabis.

I know some of you are thinking “ugh, why would you pay to learn something that you could find via a Google search?!”

Simple Answer? I AM A SPONGE FOR KNOWLEDGE.

I’ve taken multiple courses regarding all aspects of cannabis because I WANTED to learn. I’ll continue to take courses because I NEED to know as much as I can, because cannabis DRIVES me. Helping people motivates me, keeps a smile on my face, and allows me to be vocal about my passion. Do I get to consume cannabis at the same time, you bet! I don’t see a downside, to be honest.

Yeah, the curriculum may be a bit “controversial” due to the seemingly radical ideas, but that only makes it more fun for me.

I may learn from various sources, but I will apply what I feel is necessary to accomplish what needs to be done. Whether it is imparting cannabis knowledge upon new patients, showcasing industry evolution to seasoned stoners, educating skeptics, or simply weighing out a 1/4 of your favorite strain. I will use what I know to help you get the medicine you need. Period.

It’s a passion. It’s my career of choice. It’s Cannabis.

MoCann BizCon + Expo 2020

Wow.

So, I drove all the way to St. Louis from Kansas City to attend this MoCann BizCon and expo at union station.

Amazing stained glass in Union Station STL

I spent the first night at a mixer hosted by MoCannTrade, which was basically an opportunity for members to get together, network, chat and just have a good time.

All Missouri Meetup Mixer

The following day was the first day of the actual expo. I was able to go to the morning keynote speech, attend a couple of seminars about hiring and retaining employees, and then I saw the afternoon keynote speech with Max Montrose from Trichome Institute.

The expo floor itself was full of various different companies representing all aspects of the cannabis industry. Many of these booths had free gear and swag (not to mention some tasty treats and non-medicated samples of edibles).

Some swag from the expo

After the expo wrapped up for the day, there was a mixer for all participants. It was a nice opportunity to have a beverage and chitchat with like-minded people. Additionally, there was a rewards ceremony and small reception to end the evening on a high note.

Day Two ~

Day 2 was a lot like the 1st, but I ended up heading home before the expo was officially over. There were so many great people and amazing vendors, not to mention a generally happy vibe throughout.

One of my favorite things about the expo was seeing all the passion. Vendors were engaging and informative and many of them had neat swag to give away.

Amongst all the smiles and camaraderie, there was an underlying tinge of excitement. I think everyone is ready to get this show on the road and get medicine to the 35k+ Missourians who’ve acquired their med card.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with a Missouri Cannabis in the coming months.

Trichome Insitiute: Interpening Course

I can’t even begin to describe how informative and educational the trichome institute interpening course was! Not only did they host an all-day class in KCMO, but they made it fun and engaging!

Watching Chef Brandon Allen and Max Montrose share their passion for cannabis totally expanded my already positive outlook on this plant. They focused on history of marijuana, terpenes, common misconceptions, and the lack of legitimate quality control in the cannabis industry, among other things.

So, here’s my takeaway from the course (that I passed with flying colors)

  1. Strain Names are bogus & in no way accurately describe how a specific plant will effect you.
  2. You can learn more about your medicine based on how it looks (inflorescence) and smells (terpenes).
  3. Lab Testing doesn’t test for everything that could happen to the plant. (Spider Mites, Mold, Mildew)
  4. “OG” doesn’t stand for “ocean grown”, but actually “original gangsters” (original growers who put their necks out growing cannabis during prohibition)
  5. The proper way to identify species of cannabis is via the shape of the leaves (broad leaf/narrow leaf)
  6. All cannabis in the market is technically a hybrid plant
  7. “The Entourage Effect”
  8. Extreme or Bright Purple/Blue Cannabis coloring is done with DYE
  9. Our Olfactory System is the bees knees.
  10. Coughing ≠ better high (In fact, it is indicative in consumption of poor quality cannabis)
Max signed my Interpening book
(Fangirl’ing so hard)

The test for certification as a level one interpener was intense, but I really feel like it challenged me in a good way. I’m even more confident with my knowledge of Cannabis now, and I’m hyper-focused on learning as much as I can.

To anyone reading and thinking “hey I wanna learn more about cannabis” or “man this Dani chick is super rad, I should subscribe to her blog” — DO IT!!

I’ll provide a few links below (no, I’m not getting paid to promote, I truly 100% stand behind what they’re doing).

Job Fair (round 2) 2/8/20

I had the great pleasure of attending yet another job fair for the Missouri cannabis industry. Quite a decent turnout from what I saw, lots of new faces as well. I was even able to chat with a couple new individuals (even an awesome couple from Illinois) about my passion for cannabis and the industry in Missouri. I made a couple of pretty awesome connections. Overall, it was a great opportunity to network & meet like minded folks!

I think one of the best parts about going to a job fair in the cannabis industry is that everyone seems to be there for the right reasons. I didn’t see anybody that was high, or acting out of character. Even the security officer and his police k9 seem to be in pretty good spirits. (though, I will admit to being a little sad about the “do not pet” tag on the police dogs harness. I just love dogs, dang.)

Honestly, it was a great experience and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Missouri can offer its patients. The medicine that will be available to consumers in the great state of Missouri will undoubtedly help in more ways than most of us can fathom.

So yeah, this is a relatively short blog post. But hey, you’re reading it, right?

I really wanted just to say thank you to all the great people that made this day happen and were out there to support cannabis. We all need to be active with furthering the public knowledge of just how great this plant is.

Stay Rad!

Watching things grow

As Missouri moves forward with the medical cannabis industry, I’m hoping that many more wonderful groups will be able to take part in this exciting new endeavor. It’s always exhilarating to witness something new happen, watch how people work together for the greater good and see groups get rewarded for all of their hard work.

It’s amazing to see how many forward-thinking companies have been given their licenses in Kansas City. It’s very humbling, I’m sure, for many of these companies that did not receive their license. However, I’m positive that many of them see this as an opportunity to make improvements and changes to their original plans. Expanding upon already wonderful ideas and helping bridge the gap between what we were told and what is actually true about cannabis.

As more and more cannabis entrepreneurs & visionary’s are coming into the scene, My wish is that they can continue to work together for better, higher quality medicine, viable testing/quality control and the End of the unnecessary prohibition of cannabis.

It is my sincere hope that people like myself will be able to help others understand how beneficial this is to our community and to humans in general. Someday, I will be traveling this world and sharing how wonderful cannabis truly is. I would be delighted if you’d join me.

Thank you for reading & have a rad day!

Cannabis Industry Showcase

I had the pleasure of attending the Cannabis Industry Showcase in Kansas City this weekend. The schedule was packed full of engaging speakers and a plethora of #CannabisIndustry information; From Compliance to Hiring, when/how to advertise and to find your place in this fast-growing industry as both an employee and employer.

Some of my swag from the Expo

I spent a fair amount of time listening to some of the industry’s experts recall the roadblocks they dealt with, as well as how they managed to move past those roadblocks and persevere. Speakers like Max from The Trichome Institute made a point of snuffing out many of the misconceptions and misinformation regarding cannabis, as well as providing loads of factual, scientific evidence.

Max Montrose – Trichome Institute

Wy Livingston shared a compelling and informative speech “You don’t have to get high to see green”, which focused on the many ways to monetize your passion for cannabis without having to consume it in traditional methods.

MoCannTrade booth at the Expo

The Expo housed many companies and businesses that have found their niche in the Cannabis industry. A group close to my heart MoCannTrade, had a wonderful booth with a ton of great canna-gear. There were booths from local security like CST Solutions, to many other experts who specialize in Cannabis. I saw companies like Simplifya who focus on Compliance (an often tricky aspect of this industry), and New Growth Insurance, an insurance group that specializes in Cannabis, Hemp, & CBD only insurances.

Additionally, a local Mechanical Engineering/Contracting & HVAC “Design Mechanical” had a booth dedicated to designing and installing Cultivation Facilities, focusing on increasing yield and efficiency while providing the highest quality design work for KC’s Cannabis Companies/Businesses.

Day 2, I found myself bouncing around The Oliver Building, listening to various informative discussions on Cannabis. My favorite speech of the day was from Sarara Corva, “Consumption and Over-Consumption” — Sarara provided a lot of beneficial information regarding cannabis consumption and generously offered samples of UnDoo “the greened out antidote”

UnDoo product sample

Overall, the Cannabis Industry Showcase was educational and engaging. I’m eagerly awaiting the official licensing for many hopeful local Missouri cannabis companies, as well as the end to marijuana prohibition in the USA.

I sincerely appreciate the experience I had this weekend and cannot wait to see what KCMO shows us in the coming months/years. Thanks for reading & stay tuned for more!
